You’re an expert at sorting through the details of code and finding what everyone else missed. That meticulous nature and attention to detail are great qualities to add to your resume, but getting started has you feeling stuck.

The Perfect Sequence for a Software Tester Resume

As simple python, a great resume follows a structured and predictable format of these five sections:

To write the most effective resume, follow these three rules:

Keep it simple.

People who read resumes for a living aren’t impressed with fancy columns and colors like it’s your first day designing with CSS. Make it easy for them to find the information they’re looking for by using a simple and straightforward design (as seen in the resume example).

Don’t use paragraphs.

No one wants to read a paragraph, and especially not one about RTMs and Rational QM (no offense). Streamline your resume to be as simple as possible with lists, keywords and bullet points.

Know your user.

Sending the same resume to a mobile UI position, a supply chain database position and a software gaming company is like being a Software Tester who runs the same functional or regression testing for every program.

So…not effective.

Each resume you submit should be tailored toward the job you’re applying for – just like you tailor the testing matrix for each program you test. This makes all the difference between landing a mediocre job as bland as a generic resume, or finding the Software Tester position of your dreams.

Name + Contact

First, start with your first and last name at the top of the page. Pick a system font (anything but Brush Script M7), and make it slightly larger than the rest of the text.

Professional Summary

Here’s where you show the recruiter what makes you that “Methodical Junior Software QA Tester” or “Skilled Senior UI Software Tester.”

To do so, you’ll make a series of lists in two to four lines.

In line one, list all the job titles you’d accept for your next position, like: QA Tester, Software Tester, Software Testing Consultant, and so on.

Just be sure to include (verbatim) the job title you’re applying for.

In line two, list the skills that qualify you for these positions.

Use the posted job description to find the specific skills they’re looking for and include whatever aligns with your skillset.

If you’re applying for a position in mobile UI testing, add skills specific to that role: AGILE development, Gatling or VNF instantiation.

For an SAP position, more general skills and qualifications like functional and automated testing, SDLC, regression testing or data integrity might apply.

Lines three and four of your professional summary are optional.

In line three, list any achievements you’ve had in software testing (notable software projects, recognizable apps or contributions), and in line four, list your promotions, awards or successes.

If nothing comes to mind for either of these – or not enough to make a list – don’t worry about it. Lines one and two are enough to land you an interview.

Work Experience

Start each bullet point with a strong success verb.

Success verbs are the difference between “managed” and “advanced,” or “contributed to” and “authored.”

They imply your success and positive impact before you even describe the accomplished task.

Instead of: Performed end-to-end testing and verification for mobile apps to identify software bugs

Try: Eliminated software bugs with end-to-end testing and verification for 30+ mobile apps.

Here are some success verbs you might find useful: accelerated, improved, optimized, enhanced, or resolved.

Include as many numbers as possible.

Numbers are specific. They add a quantifiable metric to your work that anyone can understand and visualize – even if they’re not a Software Tester. That’s why they’re a critical element to your work experience.

In addition to the numbers of programs you’ve tested at each position, the size of the team you managed, or the queries you authored, look for numbers in:

Percentages: your success rate with bug-free programs; by how much you increased usability, efficiency, and readability with the bugs you identified; the before and after accuracy of your queries

The matrix of tests you implemented to ensure a consumer-ready program

Your professional connections: number of departments you collaborated with; number of users for your authored applications; number of developers on your team

The number of languages you tested for a program

When you think that you’ve added enough numbers to your work experience, double them. Each number you add to your resume increases your chances of an interview.

Add every promotion.

Promotions show how successful you’ve been.

In addition to listing all the different ways you brought success to previous employers, promotions validate your claims and show your potential employer that your work is worth rewarding.

It also shows that people like to keep you around which is powerful social proof that you’re a great hire.


In this section, list where you went to school, the degree(s) you received and any collegiate honors or awards.

As you’ll see in the resume example, this section is brief. There’s no reason to include any extracurricular activities or incomplete degrees.

The most important thing is to be accurate with your specific degree(s) and your dates of attendance.

Keywords and Skills for a Software Tester Resume

You know what your job includes, but the recruiter (or the computer scanner) reading your resume might not. They’re comparing your resume to a provided list. Luckily, you have the same list in the job description.

Include as many keywords from the job posting, then add any relevant keywords from these categories:
